Skywatching Binoculars

Bushnell boasts a variety of long-range night vision binoculars for stargazers. Our binoculars come with protective barriers to protect against water, fog and debris, as well as phase correction coatings to produce clear and vivid images of the night sky. Whether you plan longer backpacking trips or to sit and watch birds in a nearby park, we offer plenty of choices to suit your needs.

The iconic tool of the astronomer is a telescope. However, telescopes are large and often expensive, making them impractical for the casual skywatcher.

Telescopes are designed to gather light, rather than magnify an object. Thus, the further the zoom on a telescope goes, the dimmer the image will be. The magnification and focus provided by binoculars are better for looking at stars farther afield. A good pair of binoculars will also have lens coatings to ensure maximum brightness and clarity.

Binoculars also have two eye sockets. This makes visibility better because they can be secured in front of the face, instead of shaking and causing star streaking the way a long telescope would. Some binoculars can also be mounted on a tripod for long sessions of backyard skywatching.

Additionally, the prisms in binoculars present the sky as it is, while telescopes flip the image.

There is a wide range of magnification powers to choose from when selecting binoculars. Depending on the specific target or purpose for which they are being used, the desired magnification can be quite different.

For most skywatchers, binoculars with a magnification of 10x will be sufficient to observe the stars and planets. Most of these objects are large enough that higher magnification would be unnecessary. Skywatcher binoculars, like the Engage EDX 12x50, provide plenty of magnification without being too bulky or heavy to hold for long periods of time. Long-range hunting binoculars like these, which are designed for a variety of weather and lighting conditions, are perfect for looking deep into space.

Binoculars with 15x-20x magnification can be purchased for more long-distance astronomy uses. This higher magnification is better for spotting specific details deeper in space, such as the rings of Jupiter.
